I'm going to start a couple 440 rebuilds for some driver projects I'll be working on this year and need some recommendations on heads. 906? No drag racing, just show/driver type engine build. Although I may change pistons for more compression, clay them up, and degree cam. (Gotta have a LITTLE performance RIGHT?!) Probably just something from CC as far as a cam kit, perhaps 292 lift 500 dur etc etc.
I always port and polish any heads I do on a rebuild. I could CC them if need be.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

My head of choice is the 452 head for street use for a mild build up.This head done right with matching the ports and doing the bowl work will work great up to and little beyond 500 lift.I member does my heads for me,Bobby Joseph racing engines in atlanta1-770-443-8874,and does unreal work at a great price. This conbined with a good cam kit, springs, retainers, adjustable rockers, will gain you real world power and torque.Build you combo around the cam and heads, and match the rest of the parts to work with them, and not because you got a deal on this and that.mrmopartech

Even with cast cranks? I have to get the compression up on these engines when I build them and don't want to blow the cranks, nor do I want to put steel in them to save some $$$

I just found a pair of 452's. But being an x-GM guy wink.gif my stupid question of the day is what's the difference between 904 and 452 heads? Valve size? CC? Will a intake made for 904 heads work with the 452's?

Valve size is not a question,as all the heads can be used to install and port the bowl to axcept the larger valves. The big area is the short side ramp of the intake port. The 452 head is better this way and when combined with a cam to match the specs of the head, the head becomes 100% effecinent through out the valve open range from .100-.500.as this is key as you will hit the lower lift numbers twice during a lift cycle and only hit peal lift once!Your head will flow better numbers through out the entire range with a smaller valve,as long as your do not intend to buzz the crap out of it(race situation). For street, all round driving,452 done with a great bowl and valve job,the volocity is better than most people will believe, and the drivability is great.Work the exhaust side of the head to get the best you can, even try 1.6 rockers on the exhaust side and 1.5 on the intake side. You can call Bobby at the number I gave you and talk to him,as he does heads all day long, mrmopartech

Not to be a thorn here, but... If you wanted to look at a stock style Aluminum head, the new 440Source Stealth heads are a good deal at $899 a pair, fully loaded. Good spec's right out of the box... almost identical to the Eddy RPM in that respect, but several hundred $$$ less. Sorry if I have inadvertantly offended anyone here, just offering another alternative to ponder...

They've been out since Mid Feb. and lots of folks are runnning them now. The chamber diameter is a bit larger than some, so most folks have been bolting them up using the ROL HG31130HT head gasket, which is also available at 440source for $12.95 each.
The heads flow at around 275 - 280 cfm at .600 lift right out of the box, and about 330 cfm after porting. As I said, very similar to the Eddy's in that respect.

Yup, they have a waiting list at the moment... Sold out the first day... the second shippment is going out now. It's a new item, so you have to sign up and wait your turn. I have a set arriving in a few days for my 440 6-Pack build.

The 452's are great heads too of course. As mrmopartech has already stated, you can get good performance from these with very little effort, if you have a set kicking around. I have a set of 452's in my shop that I'm going to be using on a 383 build. I'll just do a little bowl work, some polishing and port matching, and they'll be ready to go.

Turns out on the 1975 440 I just tore apart has 452 heads. This engine is REALLY clean with only 30k miles on it. What kind of bowl work head work should I have the shop do on these? It will be about a 500 lift cam 10.1:1 or 10.5:1 pistons all balanced of course.
