Question:
Correct Oil for Older Engines with Mechanical Pushrods
Do you have an oil for a 1967 Austin-Healey that has the correct additives for older engines with mechanical pushrod and such?
-- Clarke Brant, Seattle, WA

Answer:
Yes, Mobil 1 15W-50 should provide excellent performance for your vehicle. It has boosted antiwear (ZDDP) to help better protect the push rod / sliding cam valve train. The higher viscosity is also appropriate for older engines where clearance in bearings and piston/liner may be greater.

Web site - https://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorO..._1_15W-50_.aspx

Mobil 1 15W-50 exceeds warranty requirements for gasoline engines where an API certified oil is specified. It meets:

API SM/SL

Requirements for Diesel Powered Vehicles where an API CF or API CD is recommended

Provides extra anti-wear additive for older vehicles

Mobil 1 15W-50 is formulated with SuperSyn, an extra-high viscosity synthetic fluid, plus extra anti-wear additive to provide extra protection for severe service applications such as towing, hauling and racing. Mobil 1 15W-50 is recommended for high performance vehicles including turbocharged and supercharged engines where a thicker oil film is desired.

Mobil 1 15W-50 is also recommended for older valve train designs that may benefit from a higher level of anti-wear normally not required for newer generation vehicles. Mobil 1 15W-50 will also provide better anti-wear protection for higher valve spring tensions in certain racing engines.

For more information, see the Mobil 1 15W-50 Product Data Sheet and Material Safety Data Sheet.

Ok, after reading the NUMEROUS posts on this subject, now I'm getting confused.. If this oil has 1200-1300ppm of zinc/phosphorous, and is acceptable for use in engines requiring an API rating of CD/CF, SL how is it also acceptable for use in newer engines requiring the SM rating?

I thought the reason why the EPA (in their infinite wisdom) mandated the lower zinc level oil was because it contaminated catalytic converters.. If this oil has the higher zinc level, how can it also be acceptable for use in the newer cars?

You sir, have asked the 64 thousand dollar question and I TOTALLY agree with you in that one motor oil can NOT serve two masters! What's good for our older flat tappet camshaft equipped engines is NOT good for the newer vehicles with oxygen sensors catalytic converters, as the higher levels of zinc will contaminate those parts! I would NOT trust this Mobil 1 oil in ANY of my older engines running a flat tappet camshaft without also adding in a high quality zinc additive!
