Hi everyone, new guy here. Here's my first questtion.....
On the 70-74 Baracudas and Challengers was the "N42 Chrome exhuast tips" a stand-alone option or was it automatically included as part of another package? I am working on a 1971 'Cuda that does NOT have the tips. The tailpipes have simple turn-downs at the edge of the valance panel. I've heard, but not confirmed, that N42 was not available in California. Any truth to this? It so happens that the car in question in indeed a California car. Thanks for any insight clarifying the "N42" option Cheers DD -------------------- Doug Dwyer

The chrome exhaust tips came standard on most of the 1970-74 high performance 'Cuda models and were optional on most of the Barracuda models under code #N42. and the car would also have come with code #N41 (dual exhaust system) The car would have also come with the special rear valance panel with the "cut outs" if equipped with the chrome exhaust tips, as shown in the picture I posted below of my 1970 'Cuda race car project. The chrome tips would not have been available if your car was built for sale and use in California, and instead, it would also have come with code #N95 (1971 models, nitrous oxide emissions control) and possibly either code #N97 (noise reduction package) or code #A28 (1971 models, "noise reduction package, includes: maximum cooling package, torque drive fan & N97 package, and "turned-down tailpipes" that were required on all vehicles with 440, 3-2 barrel engine with Torqueflite transmissions registered in the state of California). You also want to remember that the 1970-74 'Cuda's and Challenger's had similar, but not identical chrome tips and I will give you the original part numbers for both cars below. Part #3404593, 1970-74 'Cuda models, with 340, 360, 383, 426 Hemi and 440 engines, right hand side Part #3404594, 1970-74 'Cuda models, with 340, 360, 383, 426 Hemi and 440 engines, left hand side Part #3404591, 1970-74 Challenger models, with 340, 360, 383, 426 Hemi and 440 engines, right hand side Part #3404592, 1970-74 Challenger models, with 340, 360, 383, 426 Hemi and 440 engines, left hand side I hope this helps you out. sweeeet rides banker... Thanks! The 70 'Cuda in primer is mine and I only WISH that the yellow 71 was mine also! Just used the yellow 71 to show the rear valance panel and chrome exhaust tips. Richard -------------------- ![]() 1966 was a VERY good year for Dodge Coronet's! |

Richard ![]() ![]() ![]() Here's a picture of a 1971 'Cuda with the rear valance and chrome tips in place. ![]() Many thanks for the good info. This car does have the noise reduction packagae but does not have the California emissions....even though it was originally invoiced to and sold by a California dealer. It appears....heh heh heh....that for the 1971 model year, the California emission package was not used for the 383/4v, 440/6v, or the Hemi...but was required on on all engines. A little weird. Interestingly, this car also has a manual choke. As simply a curiosity matter I wonder how many non-RT or non-'Cuda cars were ordered with the N42 tips. Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
